What happened between FIFA and EA Sports?

Here's some background on why this is EA's final FIFA game. On October 7, 2021, fans around the world discovered that Electronic Arts filed a trademark in the UK and Europe for a "computer gaming software" called EA Sports FC.
In a statement posted to EA's website that day, EA explained that it is "exploring the idea of renaming our global EA Sports football games.
